【摘要】:Thisdocumentdescribesmethodsforthedeterminationoftheparticlesizedistributionofsoilsamples.Theparticlesizedistributionisoneofthemostimportantphysicalcharacteristicsofsoil.Classificationofsoilsismainlybasedontheparticlesizedistribution.Manygeotechnicalandgeohydrologicalpropertiesofsoilarerelatedtotheparticlesizedistribution.Theparticlesizedistributionprovidesadescriptionofsoil,basedonasubdivisionindiscreteclassesofparticlesizes.Thesizeofeachclasscanbedeterminedbysievingand/orsedimentation.Forsoilswithlessthan10%fines,thesievingmethodisapplicable.Soilswithmorethan10%finescanbeanalysedbyacombinationofsievingandsedimentation.Sievingistheprocesswherebythesoilisseparatedinparticlesizeclassesbytheuseoftestsieves.Sedimentationistheprocessofthesettingofsoilparticlesinaliquid.Thedifferenceinsettlingrateenablestheparticlesizeclassestobeseparated.Twosedimentationmethodsaredescribed;thehydrometermethodandthepipettemethod.Themethodsdescribedareapplicabletoallnon-cementedsoilswithparticlesizeslessthan125mm.Dependingonthepurposeforthedeterminationoftheparticlesizedistribution,pretreatmentorcorrectionforcalciumcarbonate,dissolvedsaltsand/ororganicmattercanberequired.Theuseofthesemethodsshouldbestatedinthelaboratoryreport.Modernmethodsthatincorporatedetectionsystemsusingx-rays,laserbeams,densitymeasurementsandparticlecountersarenotcoveredbythisdocument.
